The two old friends were sitting in the park talking on old times and watching a group of young college men playing an impromptu game of touch football.
“Remember when we were that young and energetic?” Derek said as he scratched his beard. “No need for glasses, canes, or all these danged pills they have us taking now.”
“Ah, the good old days,” answered Kurt, slightly amused at watching his friend’s big belly bounce as he talked. “Not a care in the world and all the women thought we were hot.”
Both now in their 80s, they had been through much together, growing up as neighbors in a small town, going to school together, off to war after college, and even being each other’s best men for their weddings.
Kurt shed a tear as he thought back on their wives, both long since passed. “Remember when Sarah and Beth played that prank on us in the gymnasium? Sure got us good that time.” They were continuing their reminiscence when suddenly a football came hurtling towards them, barely missing Kurt.
“Are you both okay? That was a close one. For a first stringer my bro can’t throw a ball for shit.” said the young stud that approached them. He had no shirt on, exposing his exquisitely built torso which only made the two men sigh all the more for their lost youth.
“We used to play ball too, one day long ago.” Derek answered. He couldn’t help but notice the sweat trickle down the kid’s chest and impressive abs. Ah to be that young and built again. Kurt started to stand to throw the ball back to the guy but as soon as he did he was besieged by his arthritis and in agony fell to the ground.
“Are you alright sir?” The young guy rushed over to Kurt, visibly concerned and ignoring the ball. “Can I help you?” The young guy offered Kurt his arm as he bent to assist him up.
“I’ll be okay in a minute. Damn joints don’t work as well as they used to.” He grabbed the arm offered, thankful for the help but his pride slightly wounded at showing his helplessness before the guy. Derek and the stud bumped heads as Derek took Kurt’s other arm to help him stand.
“Sorry again. Hope you are okay mister.” The guy waved back at the two men as he hurried back to his game.
“Are you feeling okay Kurt?”
“Yes. Better at least. Are you okay?”
“Me? Why would you ask me that question?” Derek was puzzled by his friend’s concern. After all he hadn’t been the one in agony on the ground. In fact he was beginning to feel very energetic and for some reason… lighter. He was worried about Kurt though. Even as he looked at him something appeared to be different. Was his hair changing color and Derek could swear Kurt was standing more erect than before. He thought it must be a trick of the light. Still…
As Kurt watched his friend he began to see something odd happening. Derek’s heretofore big belly looked like it was growing… smaller? How could that be? And wasn’t the hair on his head getting thicker and fuller?
“Derek, something is happening to you. You look different.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about but I would definitely say something odd is going on with you.” Both men stood looking at each other, not truly comprehending what they were each seeing until the real changes started to kick in.
“I feel odd Derek. What’s going on? My voice…” he stopped in mid-sentence when he heard a rich youthful baritone coming from his mouth. Panicking, he looked down at himself, aghast as his body started to alter. His hands lost their liver spots, becoming taut and feeling powerful with no sign of the pain that usually racked his joints. Beneath the suit that was quickly becoming very tight and threatening to shred he could feel his arms and chest inflating while his stomach became hard with muscle. His legs became infused with youth and vitality, his feet beginning to tear his shoes and socks as they became larger. He could feel his neck expanding, getting wider to support the final change. His facial features began to alter, his skin becoming taut and no longer sagging as a strong square jawline replaced the old man’s wrinkles. In a matter of moments Kurt had gone from an 80 something senior citizen to a prime young piece of beef in his early 20s.
“Is that you Kurt?” surprised by the lyric tenor he heard. Derek could only gape at the young stud standing before him, not realizing he had undergone his own transformation. His beard had receded, leaving him smooth and baby faced. His body had morphed to hard muscle, his pecs now two slabs of meat sitting atop cobbled abs. Power coursed throughout the muscled young god standing where an obese man had once been.
“Yes, but I don’t feel like me anymore. I feel younger and I have an energy I haven’t felt in years. Is that you Derek?”
“What the hell just happened?”
“Somehow we got younger and stronger. You don’t look anything like your old self, not even when you were younger.”
“Right back at ya buddy. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t believe you were, well, you.” Derek still couldn’t believe his ears when he spoke. He no longer needed the glasses he had worn for so many years nor would there be a need for canes or pills any longer.
“Come on Derek. I need to get a change of clothing. People are beginning to stare at me. I know where we can go.” With Kurt leading the way, the two men jogged to a nearby gym that Kurt knew about. Once inside they stopped a young man who was obviously one of the personal trainers there.
“You wouldn’t happen to have any extra clothes I could borrow, would you?” The trainer looked them up and down, mildly amused by the two hunks, one in tattered clothing and the other looking ridiculous in an old man’s outfit.
“Sure I think I can get you something. Follow me.” He found his locker where he always kept some spare clothes in case of an emergency. He handed Kurt some of his own clothes. For Derek he found some extra-large clothes that had gone unclaimed for quite a while and were much more appropriate for his new look. “Anything else I can do for you? If not, I have to get back to my client. Come around sometime when you want to work out.”
After getting dressed they stood side by side looking into the gym mirrors, Kurt dressed in a blue striped tank that showed his physique off magnificently. Admiring the pain-free youthful bodies they now possessed for the first time and pulling poses they suddenly found themselves frozen in place, unable to do anything other than watch their reflected images migrate and swap places.
“What the…? You look like me Kurt!” Derek was the first to speak, a shocked expression marring the handsome features of his new face.
“And you look just like me Derek! We swapped bodies! How… something is happening again… I’m getting memories of…” but before he could finish Kurt was besieged by a completely new persona and a lifetime of memories of Sam, a business major at a nearby college.
“Hang on buddy. I’m….” he never got to finish his thought as Derek was submerged into the life of a part-time personal trainer and college football jock named Ian.
Reality shifted for the two as they settled into their new lives of Sam and Ian, not remembering anything of their former existences.
“You had a great workout today Sam. You’ve built yourself up incredibly over the past few months.”
“Couldn’t have done it without you Ian.”
“Same time tomorrow?”
“Sure thing.” The two parted, Sam going back to his college dorm to study for a big test tomorrow and Ian heading back to his frat house.
In the shadows where he had been admiring his handiwork, the young guy from the park smiled as he watched his two latest creations. But Giles wasn’t done with them just yet, not by a longshot. He had plans for his two new toys, big plans.
