Matt had been depressed after learning that he'd lost his brother while on duty and I'd somewhat foolishly showed him my shapeshifting abilities.
Before I knew what had happened, he'd talked me into going on the road trip Dylan had planned for when he returned. It was all paid for and Matt pleaded with me to go with him. Of course there was one condition, I had to spend the whole week looking like Dylan.
I kind of felt obliged after telling him what I could do and it felt like a fitting tribute and a way for him to say goodbye to his brother.
The day before the trip I arrived and let myself in the back door--as planned. I slipped into Dylan's room, it had been untouched since the news. It felt weird, like I wasn't meant to be here, but I pushed on with the plan I'd discussed with Matt.
Pulling off my clothes I stood in front of a mirror. With a grunt I shifted into Dylan. We were about the same height, but Dylan was strong.
When I shift into someone else, I not only change the way I look on the outside--including tattoos, I also change on the inside. I can perfectly mimicking internal organs and muscles. So as soon as I'd completed my change I had Dylan's mind as well.
I looked around the room again, and this time I felt like I belonged. From a trunk, I respectfully sorted through Dylan's personal items that were sent back. His favourite t-shirts, gym wear, watch, wallet and bands. At the bottom of the trunk a spare uniform.
Slowly the more I pulled on, the more I felt like Dylan. Almost as if his spirit was coming alive inside me for one last trip with his kid brother.
The reflection in the mirror was perfect, not even his mom would be able to tell this wasn't the real Dylan. I walked to the door and took the handle. I felt a warmth surround me, that of Dylan. My last memory was walking out of the soldier's room.
----------------------
My next memory, was a that of a chill that swept through my body. I blinked and found myself looking at the reflection of Dylan in the same room only this time I was wearing s simple grey t-shirt.
Glancing at my watch, told me I'd lost a week. Then I realised, Dylan had been with me; in control for the whole week. A memory drifted through, a final goodbye to Matt.
Satisfied, I shifted back to my own body and changed back into the clothes I'd left a week ago.
Outside Matt was in the kitchen sipping a beer. "Thanks for everything," he said in a quiet voice.
"Sure, no problem, but I don't remember anything. I think Dylan, sort of took over."
"Yeah, I know," Matt answered, "he explained everything. I'm good now."
