James gives you an elbow the ribs, “You know any of these other guys?”
“I dunno, they’re not from our precinct.”
You you turn the corner into the large meeting room and see fellow officer McGill at the front and give him a nod, he stands there for a moment with his arms crossed. “Officers, less noise please, it will all become clear in a couple of minutes,” he claps his hands a couple of times. “GUYS! take your seats, you’re not at school now,” he pauses for a moment with a smile on his face and shakes his head.
You glance around the room, the other officers all appear to be partner teams, eight of you in total.
McGill sits on the table at the front of the room, “Westside gentlemen.”
“That’s the school we’ve been working on.” You mummer to your partner, McGill looks over at you and points clicking his fingers.
“Correct!” He says, “In fact I know everyone in this room is interested in Westside or its in your investigations one way or another.” The meeting room is quiet, “many of you have now exhausted all the normal investigation methods, this is a very clever gang of criminals. Repeatedly they have discovered our attempts as infiltrating the ring.”
“So tell me something we don’t know, we are this close to cracking it.” You hold up a thumb and finger pinching some air. “What have your got? cameras, mics; what? we’ve tried them all before.” You grumble.
“All standard kit I know, but the military have offered us something new and you gentlemen; will be trying it out first.”
“Well, I hope it’s better than the last bit of kit they threw over the wall.” You retort, and the officer shoots you a looks hard.
“They call it Stealth, a way to mask your identity and become totally undetectable.” You watch as McGill stands and stretches flexing his arms. “But let me give you a demonstration.” He sticks his fingers in his mouth, and you all gasp as his pulls hard, his mouth parts; stretching. He let out a gasping, gargling noise and you’re shocked as he pulls his upper lip up and reveals another face below; a sharp angular face with a buzz cut. He pulls at the face around his neck as it flops across his back like a hood.
“Fuck me!” You whisper under your breath.
He stands to attention and salutes; “Private Johnson, strategic defence.” He shouts and another uniformed officer walks through the door.
“Excellent work Johnson, at ease.” The soldier relaxes a little. “Gentleman, you have just seen an example of Stealth, and I dare you to say that you wasn’t convinced that Officer McGill was standing in front of you!” The room is silent
“I know Mcgill, worked with him for the past two years,” you say. “So where’s the real one?”
The officer lifts the hood like mask, “You’re looking at him, McGill volunteered for this assignment, and we used the device to change him into this wearable suit.” There were a lot of angry noises from around the room. The officer held up his hand, “Don’t worry it’s completely reversible, with no ill effects.”
You raise your hand, and the officer points to you. “I know McGill pretty well, I think I would have picked him out as a fake easy.”
“Really?” The officer says turning to the solider, “Private Johnson, how long have you been using this Stealth suit?”
“Six weeks SIR!” He barks.
The officer returns his gaze to you, and raises an eyebrow, “Tell me Private Johnson, in those six weeks do you believe your identity was compromised in any way?”
“SIR, No, SIR!”
“Wait, wait, wait… You mean to say the time me, and” you gesture at the soldier, “McGill over there went for a guys night out, that wasn’t really him?”
The soldier, grinned “No sir, that was me using Stealth.”
You clap slowly, “Works for me.”
“To business gentlemen.” He officer barks switching on a display. “These are eight youths we’ve indentified to be involved with the ring, each of them have different roles within their organisation, all of them are students or staff at Westside.”
“Yeah, I recognise a few of the scum.” You say.
“Well, with this Stealth technology we’re going to put you officers back into Westside using their identities. You’ll be undetectable and be able to infiltrate the group and pull it down from the inside.”
“Wait, you mean you’re going to zap these kids and make them into suits like McGill and then get us to take their places?” You stammer.
“That’s basically it. Although I would suggest you keep in touch with each other, just in case you need to exchange identities. We have all eight in the cells at the moment, once we’ve converted them and have an officer inside we’ll release them with no charges and you’ll be able to return and continue their lives for the time being.” He scratches his chin, “Do you have any preferences as to who you want to be?” He looks around the room carefully.
