ReplyDeleteI watched Andy waiting at the steps, football in hand. It was the third day of our island stag party, but something about him was different.
---
On our second night, all six of us hit the hotel bar--by 3am we were all stupid drunk. We all shared rooms, Andy--the grooms best man--was with me on the third floor. When I finally got back he was passed out still clothed on the bed.
When I woke the next morning, he was gone. I vaguely remembered us all agreeing to meet on the beach at eleven. I looked at my watch, ten-fifty. With a groan I got to my feet and stumbled to the washbasin--splashing some water over my face I striped and pulled on some board shorts leaving to find the others.
Outside the rest of the group were sitting in the reception, all very subdued. "You seen Andy?" I asked.
There was a grunt from someone and a wave towards the beach. We collected ourselves and I followed them outside.
Andy was waiting, his normal buoyant attitude was flat and he nodded at the others as they passed him. One grabbed the ball and ran onto the beach followed by the others.
I kept my distance, Andy looked at me and his eyes narrowed. Something definitely wasn't right. "You coming?" he asked.
I nodded and headed towards the steps. He turned, and I grabbed his arm pulling him close. "Who are you," I growled, "and what have you done to Andy."
He turned, his eyes wide. "What-what do you mean?"
There was a shout from the beach, the others were calling. "I need to get some water," I shouted back and pulled Andy back towards the hotel. I said nothing to him as we returned to our room.
"What? What's the matter?" He asked me as soon as we were in the room.
"I can smell a fake, you're not Andy," I retorted. He held up his hands in protest saying I'd gone mad. He tried to leave, but I pushed him back onto the bed.
Without saying a word, I pulled at my mouth stretching his open. With a snap I pulled the young bearded face away from my own. "I can smell a fake--because I know!"
Andy's mouth dropped open, "When? When did--"
"On the second night, I was out hunting for a new identity. Something to get me into the States when I bumped into John in the lift. He made it easy for me, only took twenty minutes before I was pulling him on." I jerked my chin at Andy, "You?"
"I found him this morning," he gulped hard, "floating in the hotel swimming pool. I think he was still drunk when he went swimming."
"Sad," I replied.
He pulled at his mouth and snapped it back across his own head. He was young, no more that eighteen. "First time?" He nodded, "Well you suck at it."
"I was told there'd be memories, but there's nothing."
"Maybe because he'd only just died." I looked at Andy's athletic body, and then at my acquired slim hipster stature. "Get out of him, we'll swap. All this guys memories are in tact, I know enough about Andy now I can wing it."
We both pulled off our stolen identities, and exchanged. Minutes later I was pulling Andy's face over my own. I flexed and punched at my open palm. "Right, let's get down to the beach before the rest of them start thinking we're fucking each other up here." I pulled on my shorts and left the room.
Needless to say, I made a much better Andy than the other guy.
Wow that was a really neat turn of events at the end there. You write the best bodysuit stories Sean. Thanks for writing and sharing with us.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with a rather blasé picture but then you always do. Another notch in the belt Mr. Mitchell.
ReplyDeleteThanks, glad you liked it :)
ReplyDeleteCheers Bill.
