Ask No Questions

“God damn it, Combs!” said Coach Jennings, “Where in the hell have you been – and what the hell are you doing out of uniform?”

“Sorry, Coach,” said the college quarterback, Aaron Combs, as he brushed his tousled wavy hair away from his classically handsome face, inadvertently flexing one of his massive biceps in the process, “Lost track of time.”

“Lost track of time!” Coach Jennings said, furious, “Jesus, Aaron! We have practice at the same time every god damn day! What the hell’s going on with you, boy?!”

“Look, Coach,” Aaron said, “No offense or nothin’ but I don’t think I’m gonna be playing football no more. It’s not really my thing. And I’ve got much better uses planned for this body.”

“Not your thing…?” Coach Jennings said, “Not your thing? Aaron…”

“Listen, Coach,” Aaron said, suddenly becoming very uncharacteristically angry. He stood towering over his coach, “I’m not who I look like I am, and if you know what’s good for you, you won’t ask no questions. Got it.”

The coach saw a strange glint in Aaron’s eyes… something almost inhuman, although he couldn’t explain it. But the longer he stared into that cold gaze, the foggier things seemed to get.

“You will ask no questions…” a voice seemed to whisper in his head, “You will raise no suspicions that Aaron Combs is not anybody other than he says he is, no matter how strange his behavior may seem… You will ask no questions…”

“I will ask no questions…” the coach mumbled in a monotone.

“Good human,” said Aaron, his voice taking on a strange alien pitch for a split second before bumping the coach out of his way with his massive chest.

Coach Jennings stood dazed in the field as he watched his former student turn his back on him.

“I will ask no questions…” he repeated to himself, “I will ask no questions…”
