I pressed a button on the coffee machine and waited. It chugged and spluttered into a paper cup. It beeped satisfied that it had completed another successful delivery. I took a sip and winced, it was awful. I pulled up a chair and sat opposite Kurt. He looked up at me, a quizzical look on his face. "What is it Michael?"
I said nothing, waiting for the small room to empty. My eyes narrowed as I watched the last of the staff to leave for their next shift. I looked at the clock on the wall--two thirty, shouldn't be anyone around for the next hour.
"You should grow some balls Kurt," I growled.
He shifted nervously swirling the sludge at the bottom of his cup, "It's not easy you know."
"He's a waste of space, replace him."
He looked me in the eye, "I--" he paused, "I can't. Maybe you're right. Maybe I just don't have it in me to do it."
I stood up leaning over the table glaring at him. "You know I'm not sure you're the right man for the job."
"I--I can change. I'll try harder."
"You whine too much. You need to get a spine."
"Give me your face," I growled. "If you can't do it I will."
"No, I'll talk to him this afternoon."
"No you won't, I will," I snarled. "Now give." I watched as he unbuttoned his collar and pulled at the skin around his neck. "Hurry up!"
He continued to pull at his throat, and it started to stretch. He eased his hands under the opening and lifted. Kurt's face distorted and swelled as his whole face was pulled free.
I looked at the person sitting opposite me, it was like looking in a mirror. "You're meant to be the smart twin," I grumbled. "That's why I put you in for Kurt, to run this company."
Standing, I unzipped my overalls dropping them to the ground, fortunately I'd been wearing black jeans today, but I wasn't wearing any t-shirt today. My twin looked at my impressive torso, he had the brains whereas I had the strength.
I nodded my chin at him, "Shirt!" As he unbuttoned and removed his shirt I pulled Kurt's face over my own. I pushed and pulled at the face and neck settling it in place. I fixed Kurt's hair, pulling at the stiffly gelled strands.
Kicking the overalls from my feet I took Kurt's shirt and pulled it on. It was tighter across my shoulders and chest, I was tucking it into my jeans as my twin finished pulling on the overalls.
I looked at him and shook my head, my overalls hung off him. "You'd better get back to work *Michael*," I muttered in Kurt's voice and followed him out of the small room.
Looking around the site floor I spotted Danny Wilkinson, he'd been slacking and it was time for me to give him pep talk. "DANNY! Get your sorry ass over here," I yelled out.
His eyes grew wide as he jogged over wiping his hands on his overalls. "What's up boss?"
"Follow me," I growled as I walked back to the office.
I pointed at the chair in front of the desk, "Sit!" As I walked around the office I went through my concerns; his tardiness, quality of work and such. He told me that he'd try harder, but he'd already used up all his chances. Even though he was an apprentice, I had little patience for time wasters. From a draw I pulled a syringe, I tapped at the cylinder and plunged the needle into the kids neck.
He slumped in the chair, as I waited for the juice to work its way through his system I made a call. "Yeah, this is Kurt." "Send over that Slovakian guy looking for a job." "What do you mean he's on a job and won't finish for two days. Look, get him to come over then. You said he'll take any job right?" "Good, and he's an illegal right? Yeah well tell him he won't have to worry about being sent back, I can set him up with a British ID no problem."
I cursed under my breath, this new worker was meant to be available. I'd already put a number of illegals in the skins of other workers, they seemed to work harder than the people they were replacing.
I put my head round the door where Kurt's secretary sat. "Jenny, hold all my calls for the rest of the day. I'll be working late so I don't want to be disturbed." She nodded and I returned to Danny.
Squeezing Danny's shoulder confirmed he was empty. I groaned knowing I'd have to cover for him until the new guy arrived in a couple of days. Stripping off Kurt's clothes I stuffed them into a duffle bag, picking at my neck I found the edge of the mask and pulled the mask free of my face. I threw that into the bag as well.
Bit by bit I removed Danny's work clothes; the hi-viz vest, heavy boots, socks, and overalls. He was just wearing a grey t-shirt and underwear--I pulled those off as well.
He was a good looking kid and perhaps it would be a fun couple of days. Grabbing his shoulders I pulled him up, and shook his feet free. I sat in the chair and offered up my legs to his mouth, I pulled hard stretching it wide and pushed my feet deep inside.
It was hard work, the skin was tight. It didn't help that he was shorter than me either. I pulled the kids skin up around my chest, forcing my arms inside and down into his. With a grin I pulled Danny's face over my own, pushing his young features into place. I cleared my throat. "What's up boss? My name is Danny Wilkinson," I sounded just like him.
Catching my reflection in a window I smiled, Danny's own lopsided smile that seemed to reflect a misguided innocence that normally got him out of any trouble--not this time though.
I clawed at my hair, flicking it into place. I'd already lost a couple of inches in height as I flexed and stretched my new body, but the kids frame wasn't able to disguise my torso below. I touched and traced Danny's newly formed muscles--my muscles shaping his body--I looked great!
As I pulled on his clothes, Danny's memories started to filter through. I grinned looking up at my reflection through my long bangs--I'd be seeing Claire, Danny's girlfriend tonight. I pulled on his overalls, vest, and boots. Picking up the duffle bag, I left the room, not saying anything to Kurt's secretary.
I found *Michael* and pulled him to one side. "Change of plans, the new guy won't be here for a couple of days. I'm going to have to fill in for Danny until then," I told him and handed him the bag. "Here's Kurt, make sure he's in tomorrow, Michael will have to call in sick," I said with a wink. "I've got a date tonight and my shift's ended. I'll be in touch."
Slapping him on the back I made my way to the locker room, and showers. I think I was going to enjoy being seventeen again.
Quite the tale. The do-it-yourself workforce. It would seem that no one is irreplaceable.
ReplyDeleteI'd sorta love to see this continued
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Sean wouldn't mind if you wanted to have a go at a sequel. He likes to write serials I think.. and then leave them hanging. Just call him a serial writer.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, what do you suggest?
